Pet-Friendly Staycation Hotels in Hong Kong

From Auberge in Discovery Bay to Hyatt Regency Sha Tin — a curated guide to Hong Kong hotels that genuinely welcome dogs, with prices, policies, and what to expect at check-in.

The Hong Kong staycation market has shifted significantly since the pandemic. Hotels that historically allowed only assistance animals now actively market pet packages, with separate room types, welcome amenities, and dedicated pet menus. Pricing varies wildly. This guide covers the operators that are genuinely set up for dogs, not the ones who tolerate them with a per-night surcharge and a stack of disclaimers.

A note on pricing: the rates below are typical seasonal averages and move with demand. Always check directly. Most hotels cap pet bookings at one or two dogs per room, with a weight limit; clarify in writing before booking.

The destination resorts

Auberge Discovery Bay

The most consistently dog-friendly resort in Hong Kong. Auberge has dedicated pet rooms with hard floors, a pet welcome amenity, and direct access to a quiet beach and the Discovery Bay trail network. The surrounding pedestrianised area is uniquely dog-friendly — restaurants, cafes, and shops along the plaza all welcome dogs, and the ferry to Central runs frequently with dogs allowed on the open deck. This is the closest Hong Kong gets to a true dog-holiday weekend.

Hyatt Regency Sha Tin

Hyatt Sha Tin's pet package has become a quiet weekend staple for owners on the Kowloon side. Spacious rooms, river views, and access to the Sha Tin riverside cycle paths and Sha Tin Park's pet garden. The hotel's pet menu is genuinely curated rather than reheated chicken breast.

The Westin Sha Tin (limited)

Less formally pet-friendly than the Hyatt next door, but accepts dogs in selected room categories with advance arrangement. Pricing is comparable to the Hyatt; the location and grounds are similar.

Boutique and independent hotels

Hotel Indigo Hong Kong Island (Wan Chai)

An IHG property with a clear pet policy, good-sized rooms, and access to the Wan Chai harbourfront promenade — one of the best long-walk routes in town. The rooftop pool is human-only, but the hotel's lobby cafe is dog-friendly.

Pentahotel Kowloon

One of the more affordable pet-friendly options on the Kowloon side. Modern rooms, casual atmosphere, and walking distance to To Kwa Wan's growing cafe scene.

Bay Bridge Hotel (Tsuen Wan)

A quieter option in the western New Territories. Suite-style rooms, good for owners with two dogs or a larger breed, and within driving distance of the Tsing Yi and Tuen Mun trails.

Sai Kung options

Bayhood by the Beach

A small guesthouse near Sai Kung pier with a small number of pet-friendly rooms. Walkable to Sai Kung waterfront restaurants (most of which welcome dogs on terraces) and a short drive to Tai Long Wan.

What "pet-friendly" actually means at each tier

A frustrating quirk of the Hong Kong market is that hotels use "pet-friendly" to mean very different things:

What to bring

Etiquette inside the hotel

The behaviour ceiling for hotel dogs is higher than for cafe dogs. The big four: no barking in the corridor, no jumping on beds without owner permission (the hotel will assume it happens, but make it less frequent), no being left alone in the room without a written policy allowing it (some hotels prohibit this entirely), and absolutely no peeing in lifts. Carry a portable spray cleaner for emergencies.

Booking and confirmation

Always book the pet package directly with the hotel rather than through a third-party site. Get the room category, the pet fee (if any), and the species/breed/weight limits in writing. Re-confirm 48 hours before arrival; pet rooms are limited and sometimes mistakenly reassigned.

Plan the rest of the weekend

A good staycation is built around two or three outings, not the hotel itself. Pair Auberge with the Discovery Bay trail and a meal at one of the pet-friendly restaurants on the plaza. Pair Hyatt Sha Tin with a Sha Tin Park visit and brunch in Sai Kung. See our brunch guide and the beaches guide for ideas, and the full pet-friendly hotels list for booking pages.
